Important things to know before placing an order

During the development of the Hide-A-Way Door, our goal was to design our bookcase & mirror doors to closely resemble the technical aspects of a conventional door. One of the most critical measurements shared with traditional doors is the Rough Opening (RO), which plays a vital role in the installation process. However, there are certain limitations regarding where a bookcase door can and cannot be installed. Please refer to the information below for further details. If you have any technical questions about Hide-A-Way Doors, feel free to contact us at techsupport@hideawaydoors.com.

Deep Wall Installation

In-Swing Bookcase Doors 8-1/4" or deeper: 6-1/2" Max Wall Depth without *modifying the opening

Doors not affected by deeper wall depths:

  • 6-1/2" Deep Bookcase Door
  • Out-Swing Bookcase Doors
  • Alpha Mirror Doors

Reason: When a flush-mounted bookcase door is installed, the rear of the unit extends slightly beyond the door jambs. As the door opens, the back corner of the bookcase also moves past the jamb, which can create a pinching issue in deep wall installations.

*See Below for Modification Specs

Rough Opening Modification Chart

For wall depths greater than 6-1/2", the opening must be modified if an out-swing door cannot be used instead.

This solution is feasible only if the opening is at least 30" wide or wider, allowing enough space to add wall studs while still accommodating the minimum size for a bookcase door (24" / 26" RO).

To the left is a rough sketch illustrating how this can be achieved using 2x4 wall studs. While plywood is recommended to finish the sides of the opening, it is not mandatory, especially if the opening is already finished. Be sure to leave space for drywall on the front of the wall studs to complete the opening (not illustrated). If you have any questions, please contact us at techsupport@hideawaydoors.com.

Patent Pending TopSeal

Many hidden door companies do not want you to know that when you purchase an out-swing hidden bookcase door that there has to be a small space above the door for it to operate properly; not anymore!

Important: During manufacturing the top seal is adjusted all the way up to avoid shipping- transportation damages. After your door is installed adjust the TopSeal down accordingly. Click below for more info.

Pass-Through Clearance Limitations

Bookcase doors offer numerous advantages that far outweigh any potential drawbacks.

Outswing bookcase doors reduce clearance more than inswing doors, and this effect is amplified when opting for double bookcase doors. The wider the opening, the greater the passthrough clearance available. However, smaller openings paired with deeper bookcase doors, such as 12-1/4" models, can significantly reduce passthrough space, particularly for outswing configurations. It is essential to review the passthrough clearance for your specific door before placing an order.
